What is a fungal infection?
Fungal infection, also
called mycosis, is a skin disease caused by fungi. There are millions of
species of fungi. They can live in dirt, plants, household items, and even on
your skin. This can sometimes lead to skin problems like rashes.
Symptoms of Fungal Infection:
Fungal infection can
cause skin irritation, redness, itching, ringworm, swelling, blisters.
Types of Fungal
Infections:
Fungal infections can
occur anywhere in our body. Athlete's foot, ringworm, and yeast infection are
the most common types of fungal infections in humans.
Athletes Foot:
Athlete's foot, also
called Tinea Pedis. This fungal infection infects our feet. It grows more in
summer, hot environment. It lives in the dead tissue on the outer layer of the
skin of our toenails and feet. This fungal infection is more likely to be
transmitted in warm and moist environments such as shoes, socks, swimming
pools, and public toilets. This disease spreads more among those who do not
clean their shoes and socks regularly, use public toilets, public swimming
pools.
Symptoms of athlete's
foot vary from person to person. This can cause symptoms like cracked feet,
peeling skin, broken nails, blisters, redness and itching.
Treatment
In the treatment of
this disease, antifungal drugs should be used to apply on the skin as advised
by the doctor. Feet should always be kept clean and dry. Sandals should be worn
in public toilets, public baths. Wash your feet regularly with soap and water
and dry them thoroughly using a good quality foot powder.
Ringworm
Ringworm, also called
Tinea Corporis. Another name for the ring-shaped rash is ringworm.
Ringworm is an
infectious disease. Ringworm can also spread through direct contact with
infected people or animals, from their clothing or furniture. Heat and humidity
can help spread this infection.
Shingles is a red,
round, flat sore. The middle skin may appear normal but the outer patch or red
ring may overlap.
Treatment
In the treatment of
this disease, antifungal drugs should be used for application on the skin or
for consumption as advised by the doctor.
Yeast Infection
A yeast infection of
the skin is called Cutaneous Candidiasis. This infection occurs when a type of
fungus called Candida overgrows. Yeast infection is not contagious. Infections
are more common in warm, moist areas of the body, including the armpits and
groin. This disease is more common in obese and diabetic patients. Also, people
who take antibiotics are at higher risk. It can cause nail, vaginal or mouth
infections.
Symptoms of a yeast
infection include: rashes, patches, pimple-like bumps, itching and burning.
Treatment:
Yeast infection
treatment depends on the infection. Medicated creams can treat most skin yeast
infections. Or sometime systemic antifungal also used.
