Diarrhoea and Remedies || Dr. Abida Sultana
Loose and more frequent stools than usual are called diarrhoea. It sometimes makes people very affected. It's nothing to worry about. But it can be annoying and unpleasant until its completely eradicated, which usually takes a few days to a week to heal.
How Diarrhoea Occur
Through contaminated
food or water pathogenic bacteria such as E. Coli cause diarrhea. When
traveling to developing countries, diarrhea caused by bacteria and parasites is
often called traveler's diarrhea.
Symptoms: Abdominal
pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, blood in stool, loose stools, urgent need to
defecate.
Diarrhoea causes:
● Viruses: Rota virus,
Norwalk virus, Enteric adeno virus, Cytomegalo virus can cause diarrhea.
● Bacteria: Bacteria
called E.coli, Clostridium Difficile can cause diarrhea.
● Antibiotics,
anti-cancer drugs and antacids containing magnesium can sometimes cause diarrhea.
● Lactose intolerance:
Lactose is a sugar found in milk and other dairy products. People who have
difficulty digesting lactose have diarrhea after consuming dairy products.
Lactose intolerance can increase with age.
● Fructose: Fructose
is a type of sugar found naturally in fruits and honey. It is sometimes added
as a sweetener to certain drinks. Fructose can cause diarrhea in people who
have trouble digesting it.
● Artificial
sweeteners like Sorbitol, erythritol and mannitol — artificial sweeteners are
non-absorbable sugars found in chewing gum and other sugar-free products — can
cause diarrhea in some otherwise healthy people.
Surgery: Surgery to
remove the gallbladder can sometimes cause diarrhea.
What to do to prevent
diarrhoea:
Hand wash:
● Wash hands
frequently.
● Wash your hands
before and after preparing food.
● Hands should be
washed before and after handling raw meat, after using the toilet, after
changing diapers, sneezing, coughing.
● Scrub with soap for
at least 20 seconds. After applying soap to your hands, rub your hands together
for at least 20 seconds. This is about as long as it takes to sing the first
four lines of our national anthem.
● Hand sanitizer
should be used if hand washing is not possible.
Vaccines: Rotavirus is
the most common virus that causes diarrhea. Rotavirus vaccine is given to
children to prevent diarrhoea. But now adults are also given this vaccine.
Diarrhoea Home
Treatment: Usually one packet or half a liter of saline should be taken after
each loose stool. Drink more fluids to replenish the body's dehydration. Chira
water, rice starch, canned water can be consumed as liquid drinks. You can add
a little salt to the rice starch. Eat when you feel like eating. Apart from
this, the condition of diarrhea improves even if you eat rice strach barley,
raw banana, sabu, soup.
